Visiting Ragnhild Nes at Her Studio at Ensjø

We recently visited Oslo-based artist Ragnhild Nes (b. 1993) in her studio at Ensjø and brought back a selection of new works now available on Atelie. Nes continues to develop her expressive and intuitive visual language across painting, drawing, text, and spatial installation, often blurring the lines between abstraction and figuration.

Nes is a visual artist working primarily with painting, but her practice often moves beyond the canvas. She integrates text, sculpture, and installation to explore the emotional and psychological landscapes of human experience. Her work is rooted in intuition and experimentation, with visible influences from the Cobra movement, known for its spontaneous and expressive approach to art.

Language plays a central role in her process. Phrases and poetic lines appear directly on the surface of her paintings, serving as both material and conceptual guides. For Nes, painting is not just visual — it's also linguistic, physical, and spatial. Each piece emerges through a layered process of adding, removing, and responding.

Works Now Available

Among the highlights from our visit are three works that showcase her characteristic blend of gesture, color, and written word:

‘Land that Listens’ - Acrylic, oil and oil pastel on canvas, oak frame, 50 × 60 cm, 21 000kr

Dreamed of the Volcano’ & ‘Mirroring the Dream’
2025, Oil on cotton paper, 18 × 24 cm. Available forpurchase here.

A Monumental Collaboration

Also available is a large-scale collaborative painting made with artist Lars Gangdal during a winter 2025 residency at Duplex AIR in Lisbon.

‘Entre Duas Mãos’ (Between Two Hands) is a 210 × 340 cm mixed media piece created using spray paint, oil sticks, markers, and acrylics. The work reflects a raw and spontaneous exchange between the two artists — built up layer by layer without a fixed plan. The result is bold, expressive, and deeply process-driven.
