Growth of the Soil
Poem Books Vol. 01

This book holds one poem titled "Growth of the Soil" which invokes Knut Hamsun's classic novel of the same name. This risograph-printed volume features images of dust, skin and botanical drawings. The poem reflects on the determination of migrants and the connection a body forges with land.

One hundred copies of this book have been produced in this edition, all of which are dated, numbered and signed. This book was printed with the assistance of Vibeke O'Rourke and the Publiseringsverkstedet at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

The container is ill-fitting. The hard edges of the outline do not suit. I measure the distances between borders. I measure the spaces of the overflow.⁠
⁠
I paint in pools -- watery acrylics gather and separate on a surface as they themselves choose to, floating into unexpected shapes. I print by layering in transparencies; each deposit clouding the last. ⁠
⁠
I prefer non-definition: porosity, halftone gray. An inky lack of density with air to breathe.⁠

Made during the residency project Don’t rest, narrate: Publication as a Site for Collectivization, hosted by PRAKSIS Oslo. This book is inspired by our work in Guttormsgaards Arkiv, and all residents — A,D,E,G,M,P,V; or Araiz Mesanza, Daniela Müller, Eva Funk, Gabrielle Paré, Maria Belic, Per Westerlund and Vika Adutova —  as well as lead resident Iz Oztat and Praksis co-founder Nicholas Jones, produced publications which belonged as a series of nine. This experimental book Upon myself, bending, is my contribution.

Slice of Life, Sourdough Mother

'Jordmor' is the Norwegian term for ‘birth mother.’ Breaking the word into its parts, jord (soil) and mor(mother) directly translates into ‘Earth-Mother’. I like the image that this conjures, of a body that is carried and borne by an entity that is both woman and land, the two inextricably mixed. The very existence of this word, I would argue, is telling of the ways a body longs for (or is expected to have) a connection to land.

In Slice of Life, Sourdough Mother, I contemplate this melding of body and earth through the process of leavening a sourdough with wild yeast. Slices in the pages allow for a zooming-in on bio-like imagery througout the book, as it unfolds in an exploration of filiation and the assumption of purity.
