Jon Merz
Jon Merz (b. 1981, Neuchâtel) is a Berlin-based painter whose work has been exhibited in Switzerland and internationally for over a decade. Trained at the Bern University of the Arts and the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts, Merz has established himself as a significant figure in contemporary painting, with his work earning him a nomination for the Swiss Art Awards 2024 and several artist residencies.
Merz’s paintings often evoke a sense of reminiscence, blending landscapes and figures from uncertain origins. His work pays homage to the pioneers of modern and contemporary painting, reinterpreting their legacy through the lens of the 21st century. Unlike his predecessors, who captured impressions of the observed world, Merz creates from abstraction and mental imagery. His brisk brushstrokes form expressive landscapes filled with vibrant reflections, inviting viewers into a world that seems to evoke a lost paradise—a nature where the gaze can deliciously linger.
In a recent invitation by Gruyères Castle, Merz was tasked with confronting the works of the Bovy family's former artistic colony. His approach, which melds the old with the new, offers a fresh perspective on the legacy of these historical painters, reinforcing his reputation as an artist who skillfully bridges the past and the present.
