Hae Yoon’s felt series includes texts that reflect challenges or struggles from early childhood memories growing up in a hyper-competitive South Korean capital. Hand stitching was the artist’s first handcraft technique acquired as a young child, and also reflects the slow emergence of memories, one stitch at the time. The series is an attempt to clean out traumatic memories, while realising that the creative process and the work itself becomes a record that cannot be erased.

Hae's felt drawing is an invitation to her subconsciousness, her childhood struggles and memories. Geometric shapes reflects images Hae saw while she was waking up from a heavy surgery when she was a child. By recreating geometric images on a physical surface, she wants to invite viewers to her own private space and memory. 

Hae sourced her materials from her closet. She deconstructed her old white sweater and placed one thread by one thread on a large grey felt. This process was crucial to emerge her time and memories. For the rest of materials, Hae used wool materials produced in Norway. In this way, Hae aims to tie her past and current together into one piece. 


It Better Be 

Technique Used : Needle felting and hand-sewn drawing on 100% soft wool felt.This work reflects my personal dilemma with wether I want to have child or not. Many things floats in my head and mind not knowing clearly what it is to have child. I have had many conversations with my friends who have the same concern as they were approaching mid 30s.

This image struck me during those conversations and I wanted to create it in a visual form. As I create this piece, I gave a birth and had my son as first audience,



Invitation

Afterimage is about my personal memories and my experience with a major physical surgery as a child. As a result of my physical condition I was born with, I have had major surgeries five to seven times since age eight. While recovering from surgery, I saw some geometric images in my subconscious, and this image is still so vividly ingrained in me. The goal was to create a physical bridge between those images and my memory by projecting them on paper.
