Ingeborg Kvame - Spegelsyn
As a part of our collaboration with Open Studios Stavanger Sandnes (OSS), we’re excited to present six new monotypes by artist Ingeborg Kvame.
Ingeborg Kvame works across textiles, drawing, and printmaking, exploring contrasts between light and dark, life and death, and solid craftsmanship. Her monotypes are part of an ongoing investigation into the threshold between states, creating tactile, mystical expressions that blur the line between reality and abstraction.
Her practice is grounded in existential themes, using transitions in nature as metaphors for life's more transient moments. Through a delicate balance of opposites—light versus dark, life versus death, stability versus instability—her works invite the viewer to explore the boundaries of perception, space, and materiality.
Kvame holds a Bachelor of Arts in painting from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. She has exhibited at several notable venues including Norske Grafikere, Stavanger Kunstmuseum, and Haugesund Billedgalleri. Kvame’s work is part of public and private collections, including those of Stavanger Kunstmuseum, Haugesund Kunstforening, and the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture. At the moment, you can also see one of Kvame’s works, "Alle dager går mot en slutt," featured in this year's Høstutstillingen.
Kvame’s new series, Spegelsyn, draws from a public art commission she created for Soltun nursing home in Sola. The series features graded monotypes on paper, intricately folded to form wave patterns that subtly evoke the shifting, reflective qualities of the ocean. These drawings appear more or less defined depending on the room’s lighting, capturing the transient nature of light and shadow.
The title 'Spegelsyn' is taken from Olav H. Hauge's poem 'Havet'.
Havet
Dette var havet.
Sjølve ålvoret,
veldigt og grått.
Men liksom hugen
i einslege stunder
brått opnar
glidande spegelsyn
mot gåtefulle djup –
soleis kan òg havet
ein blå morgontime
opna seg
mot himmel og einsemd.
Sjå, blenkjer havet,
eg har òg stjernor
og blåe djup.
