Open Studios Stavanger (OSS) is an important annual initiative for the region's art scene, inviting artists in Stavanger and Sandnes to open their studios.

The aim is to give professional artists a platform to present their work and practice to both the public and the professional art community. The event offers a unique opportunity to see what artists in Stavanger and Sandnes are working on now, and helps build greater awareness and understanding of the artist's profession and how different artists work.

OSS also creates contact between artists and a wider professional network, to build relationships and lay the groundwork for future collaboration.

OSS was first held in September 2023, initiated by artists at Tou Atelierhus, ELEFANT and Stasjon K (now Kunststasjonen). Atelie is a partner of OSS.

When and where

Studios are open on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, 12:00-17:00 on both days. In Stavanger, many of the artists work at Tou Atelierhus, Atelierhuset Paradis and ELEFANT. In Sandnes, several studios are open in the town centre. Everything is free.

Four artists you can visit

Silvia Amancei and Bogdan Armanu are an artist couple from Romania who have worked together since 2012. They live and work in Sandnes, and have had solo exhibitions in Berlin, Zagreb and Ljubljana, among other places. They welcome visitors at Strandgata 17 in Sandnes. The installation at the top of this article is theirs.

Tamara Jan Blažević was born in Pula, Croatia, in 1980 and has lived in Stavanger since 2018. She works with drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and performance, and has exhibited in Norway and Croatia. Her studio is at Atelier Bygg 5, Skogstøstraen 37.

Tove Kommedal made her debut at Vestlandsutstillingen in 2004 and works mainly in sculpture and installation, often with reused materials. In recent years she has worked a lot with wood, steam bending and traditional joinery. She is in room 205 on the second floor of Tou Atelierhus, Kvitsøygata 25.

Liv Krekke Kaada started out in textiles, with knitting, crochet and weaving. Today she makes paintings, prints and collages from canvas and paper, cutting patterns apart and putting them back together. Her studio is at Atelierhuset Paradis, Paradisveien 21.

Guided tours

Guided tours run on both days, and all are free. At Tou Atelierhus, two routes start at 12:30 and 15:00. Atelierhuset Paradis has tours on Saturday at 14:45 and 16:00, and on Sunday at 13:00. The studio walk through the eastern district and Storhaug, including ELEFANT and Normanns gate, starts on Saturday at 12:30 from Kvitsøygata 15 and on Sunday at 15:00 from Smalgangen 1.

In Sandnes, the studio walk runs on both days at 12:30 from Holbergs gate 19 and at 15:00 from Strandgata 41.

Friday talk

On Friday 25 September at 16:00, OSS and CAS (Contemporary Art Stavanger) host a talk at Tou Scene 2. The English curator and writer Hettie Judah meets Sofie Bakke Ringstad for the conversation «Artist and care worker?», based on Judah's new book about finding a way into the art world after a late start. The talk is free.
