B-open is an annual art festival where professional artists and craftspeople invite the public into their workplaces. During the festival, you can meet the people who create the art you might otherwise encounter in galleries, museums and public spaces. Their studios range from industrial buildings and shared studio complexes to spaces within their own homes.

One weekend, two parts of the city

Studios in the city centre open on Saturday 19 September. On Sunday 20 September, the festival moves to studios outside the centre. Opening hours are 12:00-17:00 on both days. Each studio normally opens on one of the two days, so check the artist directory before planning your route.

Saturday 19 September, 12:00-17:00
Artists with studios in the city centre will open their studios to visitors. There will also be two guided tours visiting artists with studios in Nordnes, Dokken and Bontelabo. Saturday’s programme of events includes, among other things, a performance, an art film screening, a panel discussion and a social gathering.

Sunday 20 September, 12:00-17:00
Artists with studios outside the city centre will open their studios to visitors. There will also be
a guided tour visiting artists with studios in Laksevåg, as well as a bus tour to studios in Minde, Hop, Ytre-Arna and Åsane.Sunday’s programme includes, among other things, a painting workshop, a lumen print
workshop and a glassblowing demonstration.

Four artists you can visit

Mari Norddahl works with textile, making soft, tactile objects through sculpture, installation and performance. She welcomes visitors to her studio at Lille Markeveien 15 on Saturday 19 September.

Anne Tveit Knutsen is a visual artist working in video. Her studio at USF Verftet, Georgernes Verft 12, is open on Saturday 19 September.

Gunhild Larsen is a painter. You can visit her studio at Møllendalsveien 17 on Sunday 20 September.

Manuel Portioli is a painter, born in Italy in 1987 and based in Bergen. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and the Bergen Academy of Art, and opens his studio at Havnelageret, Dokkeskjærskaien 1, on Saturday 19 September. He is pictured at the top of this article.

Guided tours and workshops

Alongside the open studios, the programme includes guided tours and events led by the artists. Saturday's events include performance, an art film screening and a panel discussion. Sunday's programme includes painting and lumen print workshops, as well as a glassblowing demonstration.

All events are free, but the guided walking tours require advance registration and have limited places. Sunday's bus tour is drop-in, also with limited capacity. See B-open's website for times, meeting points and registration.
