Artist recommendations by Helene Knoop

Helene Knoop, one of Norway’s foremost figurative painters, shares her top artist recommendations on Atelie!

Based just outside Oslo, Knoop (b. 1979, Drøbak) infuses her work with pathos, poetry, drama, and sincerity. From 2000 to 2003, she studied under the world-renowned figurative painter Odd Nerdrum and has since refined her skills, focusing on the human figure and studying ancient sculptures in Italy. Knoop paints from live models and captures the Nordic landscape en plein air.

Knoop is also an avid supporter of her fellow artists. Here are three artists she highly recommends on Atelie:

Marie Sjøvold

"Marie Sjøvold's approach to photography reminds me of how I work with oil painting. When encountering her art, you forget that it is a photograph. Her themes are timeless, and she meticulously selects the photographs that deserve to live outside the camera roll. Light plays a crucial role in setting the right mood, giving her images a magical atmosphere."

Bjørn Båsen

"Bjørn Båsen manages to combine folkloristic tradition with the world of computer games with a unique sense of finesse. On the surface, his work appears elegant and refined, but upon closer inspection, it is like reading the forbidden pages of a comic book. What initially draws me in is the pure visual appeal—blue tones, porcelain, and history in a beautiful and obscure symphony."

Paul Hellsegg

"I have followed Paul Hellsegg's LUX series over a long period. They evoke a simultaneous sense of attraction and discomfort in me. The repetitive pattern demands your attention, while the discomfort comes from being able to look at it for only short periods. Knowing that this is not machine or AI-generated makes the perfectionism even more impressive. Hellsegg’s color combinations, deeply rooted in established theories, make his stripes shine through."
