The central idea of capitalism is to buy cheap and sell expensive. Those at the other end are the ones who pay. As a small consolation, we consumers can sometimes find a bargain. Reduced price for a limited time. Time is also a critical component of the capitalist ideology, particularly its limitation. The division of time makes it monetary.
Art's ambition to be preserved is counterproductive within a market logic where a commodity is consumable and exchangeable. But as desirable to collectors, it acquires a value and can become an investment object whose price can fluctuate. The price of a work of art is usually irrelevant to its artistic value. But not always. Price can be part of a work's conceptual content.
