Filler on board, oak panel My works are not painted but cast in oak panels using standard wall filler. This work is part of Social Engineering, a series featuring stone imprints and a composition made with rulers and/or compasses, the instruments architects and engineers use to divide space. They are titled after cognitive biases. The composition of this work is, to some extent, inspired by the Swedish modernist painter Olle Bærtling. The title means the tendency to rely too heavily on one's perspective and/or have a different perception of oneself relative to others. One example is the Barnum effect, the tendency for individuals to give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them but are, in fact, vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. This effect partially explains the widespread acceptance of some beliefs and practices, such as astrology, fortune telling, graphology, and some types of personality tests.
