FAQ for artists

Here you'll find information and guidance, updated regularly.

How do I create an artist profile?

1. Set up Stripe: To make your art available for sale on Atelie, you need to register and connect a Stripe account. Although Stripe doesn't have a dedicated art category, select the closest match.

If your business isn't VAT registered, just enter your organization number followed by MVA.

Stripe is a trusted payment gateway used by renowned companies like Kickstarter, Twitter, and Shopify. One advantage of using Stripe is that once a sale is made, the funds are automatically transferred to your bank account after deducting our 15% commission and Stripe's approximately 2-2.5% transaction fee.

2. Tell us about you and your art: Share some details about yourself and your artistic journey. Add links to your website and Instagram profile. You can also provide your studio address to appear on our map.

3. Upload artworks: You can upload one artwork at a time. For artwork priced above 2000 NOK, a 5% art fee will be automatically added. Read more on kunstavgiften.no

4. Adding Exhibitions: List past, ongoing, or upcoming exhibitions. Current exhibitions will appear on our app map.

5. Share Your Profile: Broaden your reach by sharing the link to your Atelie profile on your website or social media, especially when you have new uploads or profile updates.

How do I get an artist profile on Atelie?

Atelie is for professional artists, and joining is by application:

  • Apply at atelie.art/artist-profile (English) or atelie.art/kunstnerprofil (Norwegian).
  • Every application is reviewed by hand. We usually reply within a few days.
  • If approved, you receive an invitation email with a personal signup link.
  • Set up your profile, connect Stripe to receive payouts (this is your own bank account, not a subscription card), and upload your first works — good photos, clear titles, dimensions, medium, and a fair price.
  • Share your profile link with collectors and your own audience.

You can apply from Norway and abroad; prices and payouts are shown in NOK or EUR depending on your location. Approval emails currently go out in English; a Norwegian version is on the way.

What is Atelie Studio?

Atelie Studio is the artist dashboard inside Atelie — where you list artworks, talk to collectors, send invoices, and run the business side of your practice. It runs on four plans: Free, Studio, Studio+, and Studio Pro (Studio Pro coming later). The Free plan keeps everything you need to sell; the paid plans lower your commission and add professional tools.

(Not to be confused with Atelie Studio i Via Vika, our physical venue in Oslo. The plans here refer to the digital product.)

I'm already an artist on Atelie. What changed?

If you didn't pick a paid plan, your account is on Free — 30% commission, with your profile, work, collectors, history, and messages all exactly where they were. Nothing was deleted. The professional tools (analytics, CRM, invoicing, payment links, follower broadcasts) now live on the paid plans. Start Studio or Studio+ anytime to move to 15% commission and unlock them — and you can switch back to Free whenever you like.

Do I have to choose a plan right now?

No. The Free plan works for selling on Atelie — profile, uploads, sales, messages, payouts. Move to a paid plan whenever lower commission and the full toolkit are worth it to you. There's no deadline.

Plans & pricing

What's the difference between Free, Studio, Studio+, and Studio Pro?

  • Free — 0 NOK/month, 30% commission (you keep 70%). Profile, artwork uploads, sales, direct messages with collectors, secure payment via card, Klarna and Vipps, CV and inventory import.
  • Studio — 75 NOK/month, 15% (you keep 85%). Adds analytics & insights, Collections (group your works), bids and commission requests, exhibitions on your profile and on the Atelie map, art-leasing visibility, and CV import/export.
  • Studio+ — 95 NOK/month launch offer (normally 195), 15%. Adds CRM and contacts, invoicing and payment links, follower broadcasts, certificate of authenticity, PDF and CSV import/export, and exporting Collections to a website or PDF. 14-day free trial.
  • Studio Pro — 295 NOK/month, coming later this year. Will add a website builder, personal onboarding, Fiken integration, and an AI application writer.

Should I pick Studio or Studio+?

Pick Studio if you mainly want the lower 15% commission plus analytics, Collections, and exhibitions on the map. Pick Studio+ if you also invoice clients, send payment links, run a contact list (CRM), broadcast to your followers, or issue certificates of authenticity. Both drop your commission to 15% and both include the 14-day trial.

Why is Free 30% commission and paid plans 15%?

Running and developing the platform costs money. The model — an affordable subscription plus 15% commission for paying artists — funds development for everyone, including artists on Free. We'd rather give you the choice: stay free, or pay a small subscription and cut your commission roughly in half.

What do I actually receive from a sale?

From the sale price we deduct your commission and Stripe's transaction fee. For example, a work sold for 10,000 NOK:

  • On Studio / Studio+ (15%): −1,500 commission, −~250 Stripe fee (2.5%) → you receive about 8,250 NOK.
  • On Free (30%): −3,000 commission, −~250 Stripe fee → you receive about 6,750 NOK.

For works over 2,000 NOK from Norwegian artists, the 5% art fee (kunstavgift) is added to the buyer's price and reported by Atelie — it does not come out of your share.

Is the 95 NOK Studio+ launch price permanent?

If you start Studio+ during the launch period, you keep 95 NOK/month for as long as you stay subscribed. If you cancel and resubscribe later, the regular 195 NOK price applies. It's a thank-you for coming in early — not a countdown.

How does the free trial work — do I need a card?

The 14-day trial applies to both Studio and Studio+. A card is required to start it (via Stripe). You won't be charged until day 14, and if you cancel before then from My Studio, you won't be charged at all.

Can I switch or cancel anytime?

Yes. From atelie.art/my-studio/subscription. Upgrades take effect right away; downgrades apply at the end of your current billing period; changes usually show in your dashboard within a few minutes. If you cancel, you keep your paid features until the end of the period, then move back to Free (30% commission, professional tools gated). Nothing is deleted. There's no contract.

What currency am I billed in, and does VAT apply to the subscription?

Subscriptions are shown in NOK or EUR depending on your location and include VAT (MVA) where applicable. You can get a receipt for the subscription, billed by Atelier AS, from the billing portal — useful as a business expense.

Commission, fees & payouts

When and how do I get paid?

Each artist has their own connected Stripe account (Stripe Connect). When a collector buys your work, Stripe sends the payout directly to your bank account on its standard schedule. Set up Stripe before your first sale.

How do collectors pay — and how do I pay my subscription?

Collectors can pay you by card, Klarna, and Vipps. Your own subscription (Studio / Studio+) is paid by card through Stripe.

Who is responsible for the Norwegian art tax (kunstavgift)?

Atelie handles it. For works over 2,000 NOK from artists in Norway, a 5% art fee is added at sale and reported and paid by Atelie. More at kunstavgiften.no. (This is a separate art levy — it is not VAT/MVA.)

What are the fees on payment links and invoices?

On Studio+ you can send payment links and invoices to your own customers. Atelie charges 15% when the payment is for an artwork listed on Atelie, and 5% for other items such as services, framing, or shipping. Stripe's processing fee also applies.

What does Atelie Editions cost?

Atelie Editions is a separate programme where Atelie handles the sale on your behalf. A higher commission, up to 50%, applies, agreed for each release.

What if someone buys a work that's already been sold?

Issue a refund from your Stripe dashboard. Stripe's fee on the original payment is non-refundable. Mark works as sold in your Studio as soon as a sale happens offline to avoid this. Need help? support@atelie.art.

Selling, returns & buyer rights

Do buyers have a 14-day right of return (angrerett)?

Generally yes. When a consumer buys from a professional artist online, the buyer has a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal (angrerett) on the purchase, running from the day after they receive the work. As the seller, you are responsible for honouring it and refunding the buyer. See our Terms of Use (atelie.art/terms) for the details.

Are my own works exempt from returns?

This is a common mix-up. The "artist's own works are exempt" rule is about VAT (MVA) — not about returns. It does not remove the buyer's right of withdrawal. The real exception to the right of withdrawal is for commissioned or bespoke works made to the buyer's specification or with a clearly personal character (for example a portrait made to order) — those do not carry a 14-day return right.

How do I handle a return?

If a buyer withdraws within the period, refund them from your Stripe dashboard once the work is returned. Stripe's transaction fee on the original payment is non-refundable. If anything is unclear, write to support@atelie.art and we'll help.

Who handles shipping and packing?

Shipping, packing, and any insurance are agreed between you and the buyer. Atelie is the platform, not the shipper.

Tax (VAT / MVA)

Do I charge VAT (MVA) on my sales?

We don't give tax advice, but in general: an artist's sale of their own original artworks is exempt from VAT in Norway (merverdiavgiftsloven § 3-7). Other sales — such as resale of others' work, services, or framing — may be subject to VAT. You're responsible for assessing your own VAT position; if in doubt, check with an accountant or Skatteetaten.

Is the kunstavgift the same as VAT?

No. The kunstavgift (art fee, 5% on works over 2,000 NOK) is a statutory art levy that Atelie collects and reports. VAT (MVA) is a separate matter and depends on what you sell, as above.

Profile & uploading

How do I upload artworks?

On the web at atelie.art/my-studio/artworks: upload images one at a time; add a title, dimensions, medium, year, and a short description; set a price in NOK (international collectors see the equivalent in EUR at checkout); choose whether the work is for sale, on display, or sold; then publish. Good photos make the difference — plain background, even light.

How do I upload from the app?

In the iOS/Android app: Profile → Add Artwork → choose or take a photo, fill in the details, and save. Editing and deleting works happens on the web (atelie.art/my-studio). The Atelie Studio dashboard (CRM, invoicing, payment links, broadcasts) is web-only; the app supports browsing, uploading, and the basics.

What rights do I keep over my work?

You keep full rights to your work. Atelie is the platform and intermediary, not the seller. By listing, you give Atelie a licence to display and market your works on the platform, app, and in our promotion (website, social media, email) — this doesn't transfer ownership or copyright, which remain yours. The details are in the Terms of Use.

Account, data & security

Stripe wants a photo of my passport or ID. Is it safe?

Yes. Stripe is the payment infrastructure used by Atelie and many platforms (Airbnb, Substack, Shopify). They verify identity to comply with anti-money-laundering rules and to make sure payouts reach the right person. Your ID goes to Stripe directly — Atelie does not see or store it. Stripe has no "art" category, so pick the closest match (e.g. "Other — Art Dealers and Galleries"). If you're not VAT-registered, you can enter your organisation number followed by MVA.

What if my account is on the mobile app only?

Most of Atelie works the same on the app, but Atelie Studio (the dashboard with CRM, invoicing, payment links, broadcasts) is web-only. To pick a plan or use the professional tools, log in at atelie.art.

What happens to my works and data if I cancel or leave?

Cancelling a paid plan or moving to Free does not delete anything — your profile, works, collectors, history, and messages stay. Before leaving you can export your works and contacts (PDF/CSV) from My Studio. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except records we must keep by law (such as accounting records). See the Terms of Use and privacy statement for details.
