Andrea Scholze - Utsikten fra innsiden
Andrea Scholze produced a series of unique, hand-colored silkscreen prints titled "Utsikten fra innsiden" (The View from the Inside). While most of the works have been sold, a few pieces remain and are now on display at Atelie Studio in Via Vika.
Exploring Emotion Through Sculpture and Installations
Scholze is widely recognized for her emotionally charged ceramic sculptures and installations. Her work often creates immersive environments, exploring the interplay between her sculptures, the surrounding space, and the audience. Her organic aesthetic prioritizes movement and raw emotion over polished or conventionally beautiful finishes.
“I work freely and expressively with hollow-eyed figures, like the ones featured in these works, but also with more animal-like creatures—ranging from small frogs to wolves and big cats. My work often reflects existential themes. While I prefer working in larger, life-size formats, I also create smaller sculptures. With installations, I aim to create environments that explore scenarios and foster interaction between the sculptures and the audience,” Andrea explains.
The Silkscreen Print and Its Origins
The foundation of Andrea’s silkscreen prints, created at Fellesverkstedet with assistance from Renate Thor, is a portrait of one of her distinctive figures. Initially resembling an ape-like creature, the figure has evolved into something more human-like—not a direct evolution of humans, but a parallel offshoot, primal and at home in the untamed wilderness.
The hollow eyes that dominate these prints originated in Andrea’s sculptures about a decade ago when she adopted a rougher, more expressive approach to evoke emotions and psychological states.
“For me, these creatures embody something untouched, something that doesn’t belong among humans. Through them, deeply rooted feelings like longing, loneliness, and alienation emerge. The hollow eyes became part of my work about ten years ago when I began working more freely and expressively to capture emotions and states of mind. They’ve stayed with my creations ever since,” Andrea reflects.
Born in Oslo in 1988, Scholze holds a BFA (2011) and MFA (2016) from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Her sculptural and figurative works are marked by an organic aesthetic that prioritizes capturing form and motion over polished, static perfection.
Scholze’s works have been acquired for the permanent collections of KODE Museums in Bergen and the National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Trondheim. Her exhibitions span both national and international venues, including solo shows at the Trøndelag Center for Contemporary Art and Akershus Art Centre. She has participated in group exhibitions at prestigious venues such as QB Gallery, Oslo, Patrick Parrish Gallery, New York, and TRESOR, Basel.
